Understanding Data Duplication in Funnel Reports: Need Help!

Hi everyone, I have an issue to try to explain to a client: we have three step funnel report with a breakdown of a certain dimension (X) to only show data about it. By hazard, we added the same filter (in addition to the main filter), applied it also to the first step of the funnel. So, what happened? the data of whole funnel is duplicated and I have no idea why.... Could someone helps me to try to understand that?. Thank you all for your help!!

Hi Yuelan! Julianne from Mixpanel Support here. Diving right in, the behavior sounds like it's due to the different logic for a global vs an inline filter in funnel reports. At a high level, inline filters apply pre-query, while global filters apply post-query. The Funnels doc goes more in-depth about the behavior. As an example, let's we have a funnel looking at 'page view > upgrade', filtered for 'path=/documents'. One user in the report tracks the following: 1. page view, path = /home 2. page view, path = /documents 3. upgrade With a global filter, the user will enter the funnel the first time they track 'page view', in this case, Event 1 with a path of /home. This entry is then filtered out by the global filter, so the user is not shown in the report or counted as converting. This report would show no entries and no conversions. With the inline filter, the user will enter the report the first time they track 'page view, path = /documents'. In this case, that is Event 2, and Event 1 is not used in the funnel. They then convert through the Funnel. This report would show one entry with one conversion. When you add the inline filter to the report, it adds the pre-query criteria to search for the specific Step 1 that meets the filter. This can lead to more entries (and conversions) in the funnel.
