I need to update my groupID in Segment from its existing ID to a new UUID, so that Segment can be used more effectively across the org. One of my concerns is that Mixpanel uses our Segment event data, and a key breakdown is by company. My understanding is that by updating the groupID we'll effectively create a new set of companies under our groups. Is there a way to handle this in mixpanel so it doesn't create issues with the data?

Based on the knowledge sources provided, I can address your concern about updating groupIDs in Segment and its impact on Mixpanel's Group Analytics.
The Issue
You're correct in your understanding. When you change the groupID in Segment, Mixpanel will treat these as new, separate group profiles because a group is identified by the combination of group_key and group_id. According to the Group Analytics documentation, the group_id is the identifier for a specific group (e.g., mixpanel, company_a, company_b).
What Happens When You Change GroupIDs
When implementing Group Analytics via Segment, as explained in the Segment integration guide: 1. The groupId from Segment maps to the Group ID in Mixpanel 2. Events must have the group key as an event property to be attributed to a group 3. Changing the groupId will create new group profiles with the new IDs
Limitations
Unfortunately, the knowledge sources do not contain information about: - Merging group profiles in Mixpanel - Migrating historical group data to new group IDs - Maintaining continuity when changing group identifiers
What You Should Consider
The knowledge sources indicate that historical events are not backfilled when group keys are implemented. This suggests that Mixpanel doesn't automatically handle group ID migrations.I recommend contacting Mixpanel support directly to discuss migration strategies for your specific use case, as the available documentation doesn't cover this scenario in detail.
