I am using Duration between events for a dashboard and it seems recently my results which were aggregated at the hour level are now displaying in seconds. Was there any change on the unit used by Duration and is there a way to display it in hours instead of seconds?
Hi Philippe R., Please stand by as I search the Mixpanel knowledge base for an AI-powered answer. I normally take about 15 seconds or so. Based on the knowledge sources, the “Session Duration (Seconds)” property in Mixpanel is measured in seconds by default. There is no explicit mention in the documentation of a recent change to the default unit for duration between events; it has been described as being in seconds in the current documentation. If your dashboard previously displayed durations in hours, it may have been using a formula or custom configuration to convert seconds to hours.To display duration in hours instead of seconds, you can use Mixpanel’s formula feature in Insights. For example, you can divide the “Session Duration (Seconds)” property by 3,600 to convert it to hours. Here’s how you can do it: 1. In your report, select the “Session Duration (Seconds)” property. 2. Use the formula feature to divide by 3,600:
```LBKS3. You can also rename the formula and set the unit to “hours” for clarity.LBKSThis approach is recommended in the documentation for converting seconds to minutes or hours for reporting purposes. There is no indication that the underlying property unit has changed; rather, the display can be adjusted using formulas as needed [Docs / Reports / Insights: Advanced](https://docs.mixpanel.com/docs/reports/insights#advanced) | [Docs / Features / Sessions: FAQ](https://docs.mixpanel.com/docs/features/sessions#faq).LBKSIf you want to ensure the unit is always displayed as hours, you can also configure the unit in the chart customization settings for your metric [Chart Customization](https://docs.mixpanel.com/docs/features/chart-customization).LBKSIf you are seeing a change in behavior, it may be due to a change in your report’s configuration or formula, rather than a platform-wide change in how duration is stored or displayed.
kapa.ai this is not Session Duration, this is Duration between events as defined by MixPanel "The duration between 2 instances of this event. This works best for events that occur continuously during a session such as Page View or Screen View."
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! 📚
Thank you for clarifying that you are referring to the "Duration between events" metric as defined by Mixpanel, not "Session Duration."After reviewing the provided knowledge sources, there is no explicit documentation about a recent change in the default unit for the "Duration between events" metric. The knowledge sources do not specify whether this metric is reported in seconds or hours, nor do they mention any recent updates or changes to its unit of measurement.However, Mixpanel does provide a way to convert units using formulas in Insights reports. If your durations are currently displayed in seconds and you wish to display them in hours, you can use a formula to divide the value by 3,600. For example: LBKS[Duration between events] / 3600LBKSYou can then label the result as "hours" and, if needed, use chart customization to set the unit and precision for your metric Docs / Reports / Insights: Advanced | Chart Customization.If you believe there has been a change in how Mixpanel calculates or displays the "Duration between events" metric, and this is not addressed in the documentation, it may be best to contact Mixpanel support for confirmation.Summary:
- The knowledge sources do not mention a recent change in the unit for "Duration between events."
- You can convert seconds to hours using a formula in your report.
- Use chart customization to display the correct unit.If you need step-by-step instructions for applying the formula or customizing the chart, please let me know!
kapa.ai I cannot use a formula - I am using a a Metric in its "aggregated per user" option and then using - sum of Duration which is a native mixpanel metrics it seems. I don't see a way to add a formula to that
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! 📚
I'm sorry, but the knowledge sources do not provide explicit information about changing the display unit for the "Duration between events" metric when using the "aggregate per user" option (such as "sum of Duration") in Mixpanel. The documentation describes how to use formulas to convert units (e.g., from seconds to hours), but it does not mention a way to apply such a formula directly to native metrics within the "aggregate per user" measurement, nor does it mention a built-in setting to change the unit for this specific metric in that context Docs / Reports / Insights: Advanced.If you are unable to use a formula and do not see a unit customization option for this metric, it appears that Mixpanel currently displays the "Duration between events" in its default unit (likely seconds) for this aggregation, and there is no documented way to change this behavior directly in the UI.If this is a critical need, I recommend reaching out to Mixpanel support for further clarification or to request this as a feature.
