Calculating Monthly Active Users: Visitors vs. Billing

How do you calculate monthly active users? The visitors to my landings are considered part of the billing if they are just visitors and never come back?

To calculate Monthly Active Users (MAU) in Mixpanel, you need to define what constitutes an "active user" for your product and then measure the unique users who performed that action within a 30-day period.

    How to calculate MAU

    1. Define what an "active user" means for your product by selecting an action that represents meaningful engagement (e.g., "watch a video" or any other value-providing action) 2. Use Mixpanel to measure the number of unique users who performed that action within a given 1-month periodIn Mixpanel, you can easily measure MAU by: 1. Creating a new Insights report 2. Selecting the event(s) that define your active users 3. Picking a time range 4. Choosing "Monthly Active Users" from the measurement options 5. Changing the default "Total Events" to "Unique Users"MAU, WAU, and DAU: Why should we care about 'active' users?

    Visitors and billing

Regarding your question about visitors to landing pages and billing, it depends on your Mixpanel billing plan: If you're on an MTU (Monthly Tracked User) billing plan, then yes, visitors to your landing pages who perform any qualifying tracked event will count toward your billing, even if they're just one-time visitors. MTU is calculated based on visitors who track at least one qualifying event within the calendar month, regardless of whether they return. As stated in the documentation: "MTU calculations include anonymous visitors. This means users who only visit your homepage can still count towards MTU calculations."MTU billingIt's worth noting that certain events are excluded from MTU calculations, including identify events, alias creation, and various system events. If you're concerned about billing impact, you might want to be strategic about which events you track on landing pages for anonymous visitors.
