What's the difference between a cohort and a user group? Can they replace each other?
In Mixpanel, cohorts and user groups (Group Analytics) are distinct concepts that serve different purposes and cannot fully replace each other.
Cohorts
A cohort is a saved segment of individual users who share common properties or have performed a similar sequence of events. [Cohorts overview] Examples include:
Power Users: users who used your app on 5 out of the last 7 days
New Users: users who signed up in the past month
Dropped-Off Users: users who signed up but didn't return the following week
Cohorts are built around individual user profiles and behavioral/demographic criteria. You can use them to filter reports, compare segments, visualize cohort size over time, and sync them to external tools. [Using cohorts in analysis]
Group Analytics (User Groups)
Group Analytics is a separate Mixpanel feature that allows you to associate events and properties with group-level entities (e.g., companies, accounts, workspaces) rather than individual users. The knowledge sources reference this in the context of group profile properties and group cohorts, but do not provide a full standalone definition of Group Analytics in the provided documents.
Key Differences & Interoperability
Cohorts are user-centric; Group Analytics is entity-centric (e.g., a company or account).
You can create group cohorts (cohorts scoped to a group key like company_id) for use in feature flag targeting, but this is a distinct concept from standard user cohorts. [Rollout groups]
Exporting group-level cohorts (Group Analytics) via Cohort Sync is not currently supported — only user-level cohorts can be synced to external destinations. [Cohort Sync]
In report breakdowns, you can break down by cohorts, but it is only possible to group by properties or cohorts, not both simultaneously. [Breakdowns]
Can They Replace Each Other?
No — they are complementary, not interchangeable. Cohorts answer "which users share this behavior or property?", while Group Analytics answers "which accounts/companies share these traits?". Depending on your analysis needs, you may use one, the other, or both together.
