You can break down by a borrowed property the same way you break down by any other event property, once the borrowed property has been created.1. Create the borrowed property first
- Go to Custom Properties → Add borrowed property.
- Choose the future event (e.g. Purchase Completed) as the event where the property will appear.
- Choose the source event (e.g. Product Searched) and the property to borrow (e.g. Search term). [Borrowed props; Borrowing mechanics]2. Use it in a report as a breakdown
- Open an Insights, Funnels, Flows, or Retention report.
- Select the event that now has the borrowed property (e.g. Purchase Completed).
- Click Breakdown and select the new custom/borrowed property (e.g. Search term (Products Searched) or whatever name you gave it). [Breakdowns; Borrowed props]After that, the report will group your metric by the values of that borrowed property, just like a normal property.

Custom properties are created and accessed from within the report UI, not a separate “settings” page. From the docs: 1. Open a report (e.g. Insights). 2. In the query builder, next to the property search bar, click the “+” button and choose “Custom Event Property” or “Custom User Property”. This opens the custom property builder. [Custom properties]Once created and saved, they appear in the normal properties menu (with other event/user properties) when you add filters or breakdowns. [Properties menu; Custom properties]
