To break down a funnel by a property that isn't present in all funnel events, you can use Borrowed Properties in Mixpanel. This feature allows you to "borrow" a property from one event and apply it to another event in your analysis.

    Using Borrowed Properties

Borrowed Properties lets you combine data between events on the fly, allowing you to analyze as though a property has been tracked on all events in your funnel, even when it's only present on some events. This is particularly useful when you want to break down events by properties that exist in prior events but not in the current one.For example, if you want to break down a "Completed Purchase" event by product category, but the "Product Category" property only exists on the "Add to Cart" event, you can borrow that property for your analysis.Borrowed Properties is available for customers on Mixpanel's Growth and Enterprise plans.

    Alternative Approaches

If you don't have access to Borrowed Properties, you can also consider these alternatives: 1. Property Attribution in Funnels: You can use property attribution to determine which step's property value is used for the whole funnel. In the funnel report, when you add a breakdown, you can select "First Step Defined" or "Last Step Defined" to determine which occurrence of the property should be used. As explained in the documentation, "First Step Defined" will attribute the first property value to the whole funnel, while "Last Step Defined" will attribute the last property value to the whole funnel. You can also select a specific step number to use that step's property value. Property Attribution2. Custom Events: You could create a custom event that combines multiple events with the property you want to analyze. Custom Events3. Behavioral Properties: For certain types of analysis, you might be able to use behavioral properties to analyze user activity between funnel steps. Behavioral Properties in FunnelsBy using these approaches, you can effectively analyze properties across your funnel even when they're not present in all events.
