Borrowed Properties in Mixpanel allow you to "borrow" a property from one event and apply it to another event on the fly, making it appear as though that property was tracked on the target event all along. This is particularly useful when you need to analyze data across different events or systems.

    How to Use Borrowed Properties

    1. Access: Borrowed Properties are available for customers on Growth and Enterprise plans. Only users with Admin or Owner roles can create them.2. Creation Process: You can create a borrowed property through the Custom Properties interface. The process involves: - Selecting the source event and property you want to borrow from - Defining which event(s) you want to apply this property to3. Limitations: - A project can have a maximum of 20 borrowed properties - Borrowing only works from the most recent event within a 7-day lookback window - If there are multiple source events before your target event, the property will be borrowed from the most recent one where the property is set4. Using with Functions: To use a borrowed property with other functions: - First create a custom property with just the borrowed property on its own - Then create a separate custom property using the first custom property Mixpanel documentation on Borrowed Properties

    Use Cases

Borrowed Properties are particularly valuable in these scenarios: 1. Merging data from different systems: For example, combining client-side properties with server-side events, such as understanding which types of products led to successful transactions.2. Cross-team analysis: When you need to analyze how another team's feature affects your KPIs, like seeing if users with Dark Mode enabled convert better through your onboarding funnel.3. Adding context to events: When you want to understand the user journey leading up to an event, such as which search terms led to purchases.Introducing Borrowed Properties: Combine data between events on the flyRemember that Borrowed Properties aren't meant to replace proper tracking implementation but rather to enable analyses that would otherwise be difficult to plan for in advance.
