why can i click on reports on public boards when nothing happens except a long reload
Hi Tobias, Please stand by as I search the Mixpanel knowledge base for an AI-powered answer. I normally take about 15 seconds or so. Public Boards are meant for viewing only, and they’re specifically designed for people who may not have a Mixpanel login or project access. [Public boards]The knowledge sources don’t explicitly describe what happens when you click into an individual report on a Public Board, but they do say: - Public links are created “with the context of the Data View in which the link is generated,” and are meant to show the board as shared, not to give full in-product navigation. [Public boards] - Full report interaction (editing, saving, etc.) is tied to having project access and appropriate roles/permissions. [Roles & permissions]So if you’re opening a Public Board link (especially without being logged into Mixpanel or without access to that project), clicking a report may: - Trigger a reload as Mixpanel tries to resolve the underlying report in the project - Then fail silently or appear to “do nothing” because you don’t have the permissions/context needed to open the full report viewBecause the docs don’t detail this exact UX, I can’t say for certain whether what you’re seeing is expected behavior or a bug, only that it’s consistent with how Public Boards are limited to view-only sharing. If this is happening even when you’re logged into the same project with proper access, the docs recommend contacting Mixpanel Support for help, since that would likely be an issue rather than intended behavior. You’re right to push on this; the behavior you describe isn’t clearly documented. From the docs, we know: - Public Boards are meant to let anyone (even without a Mixpanel login) view a board via a public link. [Public boards] - They can also be embedded in an iframe, again as a view-only surface. [Embedding public boards] - All the detailed behavior of opening a full report (Insights, Funnels, etc.) is described only for users inside the product with project access and roles; nothing in the Public Boards docs explains what should happen when a viewer of a public link clicks a report card. [Sharing and permission; Project roles]The knowledge sources do not say: - Whether clicking a report on a Public Board should open the full report view for public viewers. - Whether a long reload with “nothing happening” is expected, or a bug.Because this exact UX is not documented, I can’t definitively explain why you see a long reload with no visible result. The most I can say, based strictly on the docs, is: - Public Boards are designed as a way to share boards externally in a constrained, view-only way. [Public boards] - Full report behavior and permissions are tied to logged‑in project users, not to anonymous public viewers. [Project roles; Sharing and permission]Given that the documentation doesn’t cover this interaction at all, the knowledge sources don’t contain enough information to say whether what you’re seeing is intended behavior or a product issue. To get a concrete answer or a fix, you’d need to contact Mixpanel Support with: - The public board URL - Whether you’re logged in or anonymous when reproducing it - A description of the “long reload” behaviorThere’s no more precise explanation available in the provided docs.
