Total sessions vs Total Events
Hi Yanisa S., Please stand by as I search the Mixpanel knowledge base for an AI-powered answer. I normally take about 15 seconds or so. “Total Events” and “Total Sessions” are different measurements in Mixpanel: - Total Events
- Counts how many times an event happened, regardless of user or session.
- Example: “Total Events” of Video Played = every single play, including repeats by the same user in the same or different sessions. [Measurements]- Total Sessions / Sessions with event
- Counts how many sessions contained at least one occurrence of an event.
- Example: “Sessions with event” Video Played = number of sessions where the user played at least one video (playing 5 videos in one session still counts as 1). [Session controls; Total Sessions]Where you’ll see them: - Insights
- Choose Total Events to see raw event volume.
- Choose Sessions (Sessions with event) to see how many sessions included that event. [Measurements; Total Sessions]- Funnels / Flows
- Counting method Totals → counts funnel/flow attempts (similar to total conversions, not raw event count).
- Counting method Sessions → counts conversions per session; each qualifying session can count once. [Counting methods; Flows conversion criteria; Session controls]So:
- Use Total Events when you care about how many times something happened.
- Use Total Sessions / Sessions with event when you care about in how many sessions it happened.

It’s actually the opposite relationship: - A session is a group of events done by a user in a continuous visit. [Session; How sessions work]
- Mixpanel creates virtual events called Session Start and Session End that summarize each session, but a session itself is made up of many regular events (e.g. Page View, Click, Purchase). [Sessions feature; Session controls]So: - One session → can contain many events.
- One regular event occurrence → belongs to at most one session (or none, if excluded).
- A session is not a subset of a single event; it’s a higher-level container over multiple events.

Insights: - Sessions (Sessions with event)
- นับว่า “มีกี่ session ที่มี event นี้อย่างน้อย 1 ครั้ง”
- กรณีนี้ = 1 session เพราะทั้ง 3 view อยู่ใน session เดียวกัน [Total Sessions; Session controls]- Total Events
- นับ “จำนวนครั้งที่ event นี้ถูกยิงทั้งหมด”
- กรณีนี้ = 3 events [Measurements]สรุป:
- Total Sessions → 1
- Total Events → 3
