Understanding Retention Report Criteria: Calendar vs. Synthetic Month

When I'm looking at a retention report with retention criteria "On each month", does this use calendar month or based on a synthetic "month" period out from the date of the first event? I.e. if my first event is April 20, will a subsequent event that happens May 2 be counted as "< 1 month" or "1 Month"?

I "think" the answer lies in the advanced setting that you pick.

You can go into advanced menu under Retention Criteria to switch the retention mode from the default rolling time windows to calendar defined time windows

so I think the default is rolling and if you want calendar month then you can switch that under Advanced
