I have a rather silly question: is the default color for line graphs blue or purple? It looks unambiguously blue to me, but everyone else on my team insists it's purple, and I want to know what the original Mixpanel intention was
Ha. I'm color blind so you don't want my opinion....
I mean, maybe I am too, a bit, and this is how I find out?
I pass all the tests... maybe I just have a different definition of "blue" than most other people?
according to my color picker . . . Iris. I asked three of our favorite fake friends, and they came up with the following:
Hex #4d45d8 sits right on the border, but it is much more "purple" than blue.
Why?
Hue: Its hue value (~246°) is in the violet/purple region, not the blue region (which is roughly 200–240°).
Appearance: It has a noticeable red component mixed into the blue, giving it a periwinkle-like, indigo-leaning purple.
If you need a label: "indigo purple" or "periwinkle purple" would both fit well.
#4d45d8 is generally considered a **shade of blue** (specifically a medium-dark blue) that leans toward purple.
Here's a breakdown of why:
## 🔵 Color Analysis
* **RGB Values:** The hexadecimal color code #4d45d8 translates to the RGB values **R: 77, G: 69, B: 216**.
* The **Blue** component (**216**) is significantly higher than both the Red (77) and Green (69) components. This large dominance of blue light is the main factor making it blue.
* **HSV Values (Hue, Saturation, Value):** The Hue is approximately **244°**.
* In the standard color wheel:
* **240°** is pure Blue.
* **270°** is pure Violet/Purple.
* Since $244^\circ$ is very close to $240^\circ$ and is less than $270^\circ$, it's categorized as a **blue** that has a touch of red influence (pulling it towards purple).

## 🎨 Naming and Perception
In many color models and web resources, it is classified as "Slate Blue," "Medium Slate Blue," or simply a "Blue." While it has a noticeable **violet/purple undertone** (due to the presence of the Red component along with the high Blue), its primary color family is blue.
Would you like to know the hex codes for a pure blue and a pure purple for comparison?
Looking at #4d45d8, that's definitely purple. It's a medium-dark purple with a slight blue undertone - the hex values show roughly equal amounts of red (4d/77) and blue (d8/216), with very little green (45/69), which creates that classic purple color. While it leans slightly toward the blue side of purple (sometimes called blue-violet), it's firmly in purple territory rather than blue.interesting, they don't seem to agree... yes, I definitely see some purple in the color, but it's so little as to discount it... like when green has a bit of blue in it, it's still green
the last one says it has equal amounts of red and blue, but 77 vs 216 seems very far from "equal"
Blame that on the French? (that one was Claude)
I was not familiar with the stereotype of the French being bad at math
