To get the metric “All Events [Total Events Frequency Per User]” in Mixpanel, you’re looking to see, for each user, the total number of events they performed (across all event types), and ideally view the distribution of these frequencies (not just the average).
Here’s how Mixpanel handles this:
1. Frequency per User: When you select “Frequency per User” as a measurement in Insights, Mixpanel first calculates the total number of times each user performed the selected event(s) in the chosen time range. However, this raw per-user data isn’t shown directly; you must choose an aggregation (average, distribution, median, percentiles, min, max) to summarize the per-user frequencies. The default is “Average,” but you can change this to “Distribution” to see the spread of user frequencies rather than just the mean.
2. Distribution Aggregation: If you want to see how many users performed “All Events” 1 time, 2 times, 3 times, etc., you should select the “Distribution” aggregation after choosing “Frequency per User.” This will show you the count of users at each frequency level, which is the closest to a “direct frequency per user” view available in the UI. You cannot view the raw list of frequencies per user in the standard Insights report, but the distribution gives you a histogram of user activity levels.
3. Limitation: Mixpanel does not provide a direct export or table of each user and their exact event count in the standard Insights UI. The platform always requires an aggregation step for per-user calculations, but “Distribution” is designed for your use case.
Steps:
- In Insights, select your “All Events” event.
- For Measurement, choose “Frequency per User.”
- For Aggregation, select “Distribution.”
This will give you a chart showing, for example, how many users did 1 event, 2 events, 3 events, etc., within your selected time range. This is the standard way to analyze “frequency per user” in Mixpanel, and is the closest available to your requested metric in the UI. If you need the raw per-user data, you would need to use a data export or JQL for more granular analysis, but this is not available directly in the Insights report UI.
