Troubleshooting Email Alerts for Traffic Spike Notifications

I have an alert created but I never recevied an email when there was spike in traffic: I am using the increased by # using 50 just to test but no email was kicked off, is there something else I need to set, I am using my email, in the Notify area, is there a way to send a test message to make sure it is all working?
