How is % over baseline calculated?

The "% over baseline" in Mixpanel is calculated as the percentage difference between a segment (or time period) and a selected baseline value. Specifically, when you activate the “Percent change over Baseline” option, Mixpanel shows how much a metric for a given segment or time period has increased or decreased relative to the baseline. The formula is: LBKS% over baseline = ((value - baseline) / baseline) ** 100LBKS
For example, if your baseline segment has a value of 100 and another segment has a value of 120, the % over baseline for that segment would be ((120 - 100) / 100) ** 100 = 20%.This calculation allows you to easily see relative performance between different segments or time periods. When a segment is chosen as the baseline, it appears as a flat 0% line, since it is always 0% different from itself. The y-axis can go below 0 if a segment performs worse than the baseline. These values are also reflected in the segmentation table below the chart Comparison: Time, Baseline and Overall.

The baseline in Mixpanel comparisons is determined by the user’s selection. When using the “Increase over Baseline” or “Percent change over Baseline” options, you choose which segment or time period you want to set as the baseline. For example, if you are comparing product categories, you can select a specific category (e.g., "Home supplies") as the baseline. That segment will then appear as a flat 0% line, and all other segments will be compared against it for the calculation of percentage difference. The same logic applies when comparing time periods—the baseline is the period you select for comparison, such as the previous week or month Comparison: Time, Baseline and Overall.
