Understanding the Discrepancy in Event Insights and Funnel Reports

·
·

An event I am looking at as an insights report is showing higher numbers compared to the same event as the first step of the funnel report. Why is there a difference?

This discrepancy between Insights and Funnels reports is a common occurrence in Mixpanel, and there are a few reasons for this difference:1. Fundamental counting difference: Funnels and Insights count events differently. In Funnels, users need to perform the first step event for subsequent steps to be counted. Insights, however, will count events regardless of whether previous steps were performed. This inherent difference in counting methodology can lead to discrepancies Funnels FAQ.2. Different metrics: Insights might be showing total event count, while Funnels could be displaying unique user count or total conversions. It's important to check which metric each report is using Debugging Data Discrepancies.3. Filtering differences: Funnels may have additional filtering applied, either through per-step filters or global filters, which could exclude some events that are included in the Insights report Per-Step Filtering.4. Property attribution: In Funnels, property values can be attributed differently (e.g., first step defined, last step defined), which might affect how events are counted compared to Insights Property Attribution. To debug this discrepancy, you should:1. Check if you're comparing the same metrics (total events vs. unique users). 2. Remove all filters from both reports to see if the underlying data matches. 3. Examine any property attributions or per-step filters in the Funnel report. 4. Look at a specific time frame or segment to identify patterns in the discrepancies.Remember, some level of discrepancy between these reports is expected due to their different methodologies. The key is to understand the reasons behind these differences to interpret your data accurately.

First Touch attribution is one of the attribution models available in Mixpanel's multi-touch attribution feature. According to the Attribution Models documentation, First Touch attribution "Gives 100% credit to the first touchpoint within the attribution lookback window."This means that in a user's journey to conversion, the very first interaction or touchpoint that the user had with your product or marketing efforts gets all the credit for the eventual conversion. For example, let's consider a user journey as described in the Attribution overview:1. A user sees an ad for a product on Facebook 2. The user clicks on the ad and visits the product page 3. The user adds the product to their cart but abandons checkout 4. The user receives a retargeting ad on Instagram 5. The user clicks on the Instagram ad and completes the purchaseIn this scenario, if you were using First Touch attribution, 100% of the credit for the conversion (the purchase) would be given to the Facebook ad, as it was the first touchpoint in the user's journey.First Touch attribution is particularly useful when you want to understand which channels or campaigns are most effective at initially attracting users who eventually convert. It helps in identifying the sources that are best at bringing in new potential customers, even if they don't immediately lead to conversions.
