Discrepancy Between Total Visitors and URL Path Breakdown Explained

·
·

I have one chart that calculates the total unique website visitors on our website. And then I have another pie chart that has the exact same filters but does a breakdown by a couple of URL paths. How come the total of the pie chart is not the same as the total unique website visitors?

This is a common question when working with breakdowns in Mixpanel. The reason your pie chart total doesn't match your total unique website visitors is because of how Mixpanel counts users in breakdowns. When you break down by URL paths, users can count in multiple segments if they visited different URL paths. For example, if a single user visited both your homepage and your pricing page, they would be counted once in each segment of your breakdown, but only once in your total unique visitors metric. As explained in the Mixpanel documentation on breakdowns: > Users will count in each breakdown segment in which they qualify. Funnels BreakdownsThis is particularly relevant when looking at metrics like unique users across different segments. The same concept applies to your website visitors broken down by URL paths.Additionally, Mixpanel has specific limits on how many segments are returned when breaking down metrics by properties: > We're changing how many segments are returned back to the report (visible limit), how many segments can be selected at a time for visualization (selection limit) as well as the number of segments selected by default (default selection). Can I add a filter in the pie chart to only have the first page loads and exclude unique users who visited multiple pages?
