When backfilling historical data into Mixpanel, there are a few important considerations to ensure your backfilled data appears in dashboard reports when using the "Since" date range option.
Visibility of Historical Data
Mixpanel's UI typically hides events that haven't been fired within the last 30 days. This means that if your backfilled data is older than 30 days, it might not automatically appear in dropdown menus or event selectors, even though the data exists in your project.
To make your backfilled historical data visible in reports:
1. Check for hidden events: Verify that your events aren't hidden in Lexicon by project admins Check for Hidden Events and Properties
2. Resurface older events: If your imported events are older than 30 days, you can make them visible in the UI by either: - Firing a single instance of that event - Searching for the event by name in the dropdown menu (case sensitive)
Validating Backfilled Data
After backfilling, you can validate that your data was successfully imported:
- For recent data (less than 30 days old), check Lexicon or the Events page
- For older historical data, use the Insights report and filter by these properties:
- Warehouse Import ID ($warehouse_import_id)
- Warehouse Import Job ID ($warehouse_import_job_id)
- Import = true ($import)
- Source = warehouse-import ($source)
Date Range Considerations
When using the "Since" date range option:
- This allows you to select a specific date to query for all data since that start date - Ensure your backfill process completed successfully for the entire date range you're querying - Be aware that board-wide date ranges can override individual report settings when viewing reports on a board
Remember that backfilling is most effective when you focus on the data you actually need. Most migration guides recommend backfilling a year's worth (or less) of historical data to allow for year-over-year analysis without overwhelming your project with rarely used older data.
