Measures to prevent accidental mass emails?

We recently had a situation where a mass email was accidentally sent out via Mixpanel.

We realized this shortly after pressing the send button.

What sucked though was that there was absolutely no way to pause the email campaign. All we could do was sit back and watch the emails get sent out.

What mechanisms does Mixpanel have to prevent this or at least do some damage control?

Mailchimp, for example, lets you pause emails even they've been scheduled to sent: https://mailchimp.com/help/cancel-a-campaign/

Clicking on the switch should turn off the message right away. This means that messages that are in that second going out will not stop but the messages going out after you disable the sending should stop

Note that this will not stop messages currently going out, just messages after that. Additionally, disabling Sending will move your message from the Active tab to the Inactive tab.

Do you mean the messages go out in bursts? If so, do you know what the burst sizes are and what the interval is?

That's good to know, thanks! Our initial instinct was to delete the campaign but that didn't stop the messages from sending out. We totally missed the Sending flag.

Hey @amp, sorry to hear about your situation. I've also run into this issue before when I was getting started 😞 .

To stop sending the campaign/message, you would need to disable the Sending button in your campaign messages (screenshot attached). Green is enable; Gray is disable. Note that this will not stop messages currently going out, just messages after that. Additionally, disabling Sending will move your message from the Active tab to the Inactive tab.

One major thing to note is that the project owner is the only one allowed to disable or enable messages being sent.

You can also disable messages under the Delivery Settings of your message (second screenshot attached).

Hope this helps you out!

PS. We've been figuring out exactly 'how' this happened and haven't figured out why yet. It seems like we had a very specific user query configured, but some UI glitch while navigating back/forward cleared the query and it selected all users.

A bit disappointing because we emailed Mixpanel support almost 2 weeks and have not heard back at all!
