# Does redoing Step 1 event exits the user from the funnel?

We have a 3 step funnel, we want to count uniques.

We were wondering about the situation where the user does Step 1 in the funnel multiple times before they do Step 2 or convert.

Would redoing Step 1 make them exit the funnel? As “Each user enters the funnel only once, and this is on the first time they perform the Step 1 event in the date range” https://help.mixpanel.com/hc/en-us/articles/360029190092-Conversion-Criteria-in-Funnels

So would Step 1 → Step 1 → Step 1 → Step 2 → Step 3 still count as a conversion if it happened within the conversion criteria time range?

Hey @omarzouk!

Great question!

TLDR: If a user did Step 1 → Step 1 → Step 1 → Step 2 → Step 3, they would still count as a conversion if they do all steps within the conversion criteria time range.

After entering the Funnel, it’s looking for the immediate next step and will ignore all other events the user performs. The user can perform Step 1 as many times as they’d like (or a hundred other unrelated events) but the Funnel will only be looking for whether the user performs Step 2 to determine if the user gets to move along (must still be within the conversion criteria time range). The user does not exit the funnel for performing steps repeatedly.

If the user doesn’t finish all the steps within the conversion criteria time range, they won’t count as a conversion. As this is a Uniques funnel, the user doesn’t get to try again.

In a Totals Funnel, the user does get to try again. Say you have a 3-step Totals funnel, your conversion criteria is 5 minutes and your user did the following:

8:30 - Step 1   ← User enters Totals funnel here

8:31 - Step 1   ← The Funnel is solely focused on looking for Step 2 now so it ignore this event

8:32 - Step 1

8:33 - Step 3   ← User would drop off here because they didn’t do all Funnel Steps in order, within 5 minutes of entering funnel

--

8:45 - Step 1   ← User gets to re-enter and try again having exited their previous attempt

8:46 - Step 2

8:47 - Step 1  ← The Funnel is solely focused on looking for Step 3 now so it ignore this event

8:48 - Step 3   ← User counts as a conversion because they finished all your steps within 5 minutes.

--

8:55 - Step 1   ← User re-enters Total funnel having converted previously

9:03 - Step 2   ← User would drop off because they didn’t get to finish all steps within 5 minutes of entering again
